Specierum Collatio the name of a tax provided for in the Theodosian Code. It was so called because this tribute was commonly paid in specie — as in corn, wine, oil, iron, brass, etc. for the emperor's service. Being the ordinary standing tax of the empire, it is no less frequently styled indictio canonica, in opposition to the superindicta et extraordinaria, that is, such taxes as were levied upon extraordinary occasions. See Bingham, Christ. Antiq. bk. 5, ch. 3, § 3.
